Plaza Cuartel is a memorial park built on the site of the former Japanese garrison where one of the worst atrocities of WWII in the Philippines occurred. On December 14, 1944, Japanese soldiers herded 150 American prisoners of war into underground tunnels and set them on fire. Only 11 survived.
The memorial features informational plaques telling the full story, remnants of the original garrison walls, and a peaceful garden. A marker lists the names of those who perished. The site is both a history lesson and a place for quiet reflection.
Located next to the Immaculate Conception Cathedral on Rizal Avenue, it's easily visited as part of a city center walk.
Local tip
Take time to read all the plaques. The story is heartbreaking but important. The memorial is right next to the cathedral, so visit both together.
