Malampaya Sound is a protected maze of bays, estuaries, and fishing villages on Taytay's west side, walled off from the open sea by a peninsula. Its inner waters shelter a critically endangered population of Irrawaddy dolphins: snub-nosed, shy, and down to a few dozen animals.
Dolphin-watching boats run from the sound's fishing villages for ₱1,500–2,500 and take about two hours. Sightings are genuinely not guaranteed; this is one of the rarest marine mammals anywhere.
Even on a no-dolphin day the sound delivers: mangrove channels, sea eagles, and a working fishing life that hasn't changed much in decades.
Local tip
Go at first light on a windless day: Irrawaddy dolphins surface as slow rolling backs, no leaps, and any chop hides them completely. Arrange the boat through Taytay's tourism office the day before, and keep expectations loose: it's a wildlife encounter, not a show.
