About
Nasubata Reef is one of the most pristine coral reef systems in the Philippines, largely untouched due to Balabac's extreme remoteness. The reef is home to an extraordinary diversity of hard and soft corals, giant clams, manta rays, sea turtles, reef sharks, and an overwhelming abundance of tropical fish.
Snorkeling here is a world-class experience. The water is crystal clear with visibility often exceeding 20 meters. The coral coverage is nearly 100% in some areas, a sight increasingly rare in Southeast Asia due to bleaching and human impact.
The reef is part of the larger Balabac Strait ecosystem, which connects the Sulu Sea to the South China Sea and serves as a major marine biodiversity corridor.
Local tip
Bring your own quality mask and snorkel, because there are no rental shops in Balabac. The reef is shallow (2-4m), so snorkeling is better than diving here.
