El Nido is for lagoons, beaches, and a vibrant town scene. Coron is for lakes, wreck diving, and a more rugged adventure vibe. If you can, visit both. If you can only pick one, read on.
Landscapes
El Nido: Towering limestone cliffs, hidden lagoons with emerald water, white sand beaches, dramatic island silhouettes at sunset. The Bacuit Archipelago is one of the most visually stunning places on Earth.
Coron: Crystal-clear freshwater lakes inside volcanic craters, WWII shipwrecks on the seabed, hot springs in mangroves. Less "classic tropical paradise" and more "otherworldly adventure."
Winner: Tie. Completely different beauty.
Activities
El Nido: Island hopping (4 tour options), kayaking, cliff climbing, beach lounging, surfing (at Duli), nightlife.
Coron: Island hopping, wreck diving (world-class), freediving, lake swimming, hot springs, Mt. Tapyas sunset climb.
Winner: El Nido for variety. Coron for diving.
Crowds
El Nido: Popular and can feel crowded at peak spots (Big Lagoon midday, Las Cabanas at sunset). Tour boats cluster at the same spots. Town is busy.
Coron: Less crowded overall. Tour boats spread out more. Town is quieter and more local.
Winner: Coron for fewer crowds.
Budget
El Nido: Slightly more expensive. Accommodation and food options are wider but tourist-priced. Tours P1,200/person.
Coron: Slightly cheaper accommodation and food. Tours P1,500-2,500 (but include more stops and longer boat rides).
Winner: Similar overall. Coron is marginally cheaper.
Food & Nightlife
El Nido: Dozens of restaurants from budget to upscale. Night market on the beach. Beach bars with music. Decent nightlife scene.
Coron: Fewer restaurant options but good local food. Quieter evenings. Some bars but nothing like El Nido's scene.
Winner: El Nido for food and nightlife.
Getting There
El Nido: 5-6 hour van from Puerto Princesa, or direct flight to Lio Airport (AirSWIFT from Manila).
Coron: 1-hour flight from Manila to Busuanga Airport, then 30 minutes to town. Easier access.
Winner: Coron for easier access from Manila.
Our Recommendation
If you have 7+ days, do both: take the ferry between them (3.5 hours, P1,600-2,200) and experience the best of Palawan.
If you only have 4-5 days: choose El Nido if you love beaches and lagoons, or Coron if you love diving and adventure.
