Matinloc Shrine is an abandoned Catholic shrine perched on a cliff on Matinloc Island, part of Tour C. Built in the 1980s, the shrine was dedicated to the Virgin Mary but was abandoned after a typhoon. The crumbling white structure against the limestone cliffs and turquoise sea creates a hauntingly beautiful scene.
Below the shrine, a narrow passage leads to a hidden beach, a tiny strip of sand enclosed by towering limestone walls. The contrast between the ruined shrine above and the paradise beach below makes this one of the most unique stops in El Nido.
Climbing up to the shrine platform offers panoramic views of the Bacuit Archipelago. The steps are steep but short.
Local tip
Climb to the top platform for the view, then take the narrow path down to the hidden beach below. Most people miss the beach, so ask your guide.
